Dennos
Challenge / Objective
The Dennos, a fine art museum in Traverse City, Michigan, was facing an awareness and identity challenge. Due to its location on the campus of Northwestern Michigan College, it was seen by many as an academic institution rather than a premier cultural center, which houses nearly 3,000 diverse works of art – including one of the largest and most historically complete collections of Inuit works in the United States.
Solution
Together with the Dennos team, we set out to transform this overlooked Northern Michigan gem into a place that locals and visitors, alike, actively seek out. We conducted deep research, anchored by interviews with a wide range of participants, including Dennos staff, NMC faculty, museum members, donors, and volunteers. Their insights told a story of the Dennos that we were excited to capture.
Result
An elevated brand that reveals the Dennos’ true identity: a world-class setting and shared space for dialogue, discovery, and connection for people of all ages. A new tagline – “Ignite curiosity. Awaken wonder.” – sets the tone for a range of dynamic visuals, including a bold new suite of logos and a modern color palette designed to reflect the Dennos as a museum in motion.
The team at Phire Group were extremely thoughtful, organized, and open while navigating the museum’s first brand refresh in nearly 20 years. They really listened to stakeholders and developed a brand that celebrates the unique positioning of the museum while creating purposeful connections with our parent organization, Northwestern Michigan College. In doing so, they built a brand system that’s helping bridge a 35 year gap in mutual support, and that our college and wider community have embraced for its vibrancy.
